Ballardvale Cafe in Andover Historic District

Andover's Historic Ballardvale District

Took a brisk walk through the Historic Ballardvale District in Andover yesterday. The air was refreshingly crisp after an ice-cold Thanksgiving Day. Snow crunched under my feet and a late-autumn sun cast shadows and reflections on this quintessential slice of New England in South Andover — the perfect backdrop for the old-fashioned and friendly Ballardvale Cafe.

Family-Run Cafe Serves up Home Cooking

Peeking into the window of the Ballardvale Cafe reveals a cozy and inviting mom-and-pop kitchen of yesteryear. The owner Sharon was frosting an enormous cake when I stopped in and still took the time to chat with me.

Located across from The Ballardvale Train Station

The Ballardvale Cafe is the perfect pit stop before your Boston commute for a morning coffee, home-made goodies, or made-to-order bacon-and-egg bagel.

Fresh-Baked Scones Are a Cafe Specialty

Get there early enough and enjoy an oven-warm, dense and over-sized scone loaded with juicy blueberries. The owner Sharon treated me  — did I say friendly mom-and-pop shop of yesteryear — to an apple scone that was amazing.

Local Lunch Hotspot and Kid Friendly

The Ballardvale Cafe also serves lunch — think home-made soups and comfort food. It's a short walk from the Ballardvale Playground — so bring the kids, they'll love watching the trains go by while enjoying a fresh-off-the-grill tuna melt or an enormous, fresh-baked whoopie pie!
